Moving Your Human Resources Career Up In The World: Are You Ready?

by Byron Johnston

Human resources is a regular department in almost any business anywhere. HR department staff are responsible for recruiting candidates to fill open positions, training exercises, and benefits packages. Some HR departments also handle payroll. If you are an HR employee, and you want to move your career up in the world, how do you do it? Are you ready to move up? In California, you manage this tough decision by applying for the PHRCa certification program. Here is what this entails.

What the PHRCa Is

Entry-level HR personnel wonder how their careers could advance, given that there is not much vertical movement in this field. The only way up is with more education, more certification and training, and/or quitting one employer to take a better position with another employer. The PHRCa is the Professional Human Resources of California certification program.

The PHRCa is a paid examination you need to pass for certification. It also requires "x" amount of education and experience before you are allowed to take the exam. If you pass, you will be able to move up to HR middle management, a step up from entry level.

When You Do Not Have the Education or Experience

The laws are pretty strict about the PHRCa. In other states, it is simply referred to as the PHR, but California has much more complicated laws surrounding human resources work. Regardless of what state in which you attempt to take the exam, you will be barred from doing so if you do not stick to the education and experience requirements.

If you have the education, but lack even a month's experience, you cannot take the exam. For example, if you have a bachelor's degree in human resources, but you do not have two years' experience serving in the professional role as an HR professional, you are out of luck. Composite experience and education will not do. The requirements are very specific and unwavering. The good news is that you can take the exam as soon as your education and experience match the requirements, so keep working until you get there, or return to school and get a higher degree in human resources.

When You Are Finally Ready

When you are finally ready to take the leap, you will need almost $500 as your fee for the exam. You can register for the exam online. You will be given a place and a time to take the exam, as well as preparation materials for the exam. If you fail, you can try again, but you are out that money every time you try and you fail the test.
